DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:

SMITH -- At her home in Mehama, this county, at 10:45 a.m., Monday, April 8, 1895, Mrs. Mehama Smith, in her 74th year.
"Aunt Mehama" Smith was the wife of James X. Smith, having been united in wedlock with him on the 29th of September, 1841. They have been residents of Oregon since the ‘50’s, and during the pioneer days of Salem were proprietors of the Mansion House on North Liberty street, which ranked then as one of the leading hotels of the valley. They removed to their Santiam home after a few years’ residence here and there they remained up to the present time.
Mrs. Smith and husband were the founders of the town of Mehama and conducted the hotel there; their reputation in the latter business is far-famed throughout the Willamette valley. "Aunt Mehama’s" meals were the finest in the land. She was the mother of Mrs. G. P. Terrell, formerly of Salem, but now of Mehama, and Dr. E. O. Smith of Portland.
Her deathbed was surrounded by her family and friends. She had been ill over four months. Her life has been one of rare purity and Christian fidelity, making her loved by all who knew her. Her death will cause sadness to the many who have been the recipients of her tender sympathy and helpfulness. The family and especially her aged companion, now in his 78th year, have the sympathy of all in this their great loss.
The funeral service was held at her home today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m., and burial will take place at Salem tomorrow,(Wednesday) at 2 p.m. She was one of the first members of the Baptist church organized in Salem in 1859.
