BIOGRAPHICAL (Source, Brian Fukuda):
Father Mokusaburo Fukuda, died 6 August 1903; Mother Kimi Okazaki, b. 17 Aug 1853, 5 July 1913. Roy came to Portland, Oregon via Vancouver, BC on May 9, 1892. He worked for the Oregon Shortline RR in Central Idaho from June 1893 to 1895, and for Adam Ifland in Pica, Idaho (nka Picabo) as a farm laborer from 1895 to 1900. He is listed on the 1900 Idaho Census. Roy came to Salem, Marion Co. area around 1905 and is listed on the 1910 Oregon census. Hayes & Brown drained Lake Labish and opened up the area to onion growing about 1938. It was brand new ground and there were problems with grasses invading the area. Labor was very intensive to keep the fields weed free. Madison Lafayette Jones helped the farmers get a start.
BARELY ESCAPE WITH THEIR LIVES; Fire Destroys Home of Lake Labish Resident LAKE LABISH, Or., July 30-- One of the hottest and most spectacular fires Lake Labish has seen for years occurred here this morning at 1:30 o'clock, when the farm residence of Roy K. Fukada was burned to the ground. The Fukada brothers conduct one of the large Lake Labish onion farms, and although being Japanese, both are intelligent and well educated business men. The fire is thought to have had its origin in the bathroom, and so rapid was its progress that Mr. Fukada and his family barely escaped with their lives. One member of the family found it necessary to leap from a window of the burning building. Every article of furniture and clothing was consumed, and among the articles burned were an expensive phonograph, a valuable violin, nine gold watches six guns and much valuable furniture, aggregating several hundred dollars in value.

The presence of a tank of coal-oil in the basement probably increased the fire, as cinders from the building were borne to farmyards two miles distant. Fortunately no other fires were ignited, which was a lucky circumstance, as the timber and vegetation are extremely dry at this season. Mr. Fukada looks at the situation very optimistically. Says that his loss is about $1500 and while he carried no insurance, he will rebuild immediately, and that the prospects for a big output of fine onions was never better than it is at present.

Roy K. Fukuda, late resident of Salem route 2, Box 373, November 20, at the age of 76. Survived by the widow, Mrs. Nobu Fukuda, Salem; two daughters, Mrs. J. Y. Tanaka and Mrs. Suzie Shimizu both of Portland; a son, Frank Fukuda Salem; sister, Mrs. K. Sugi in Japan; brother, Joe Y. Fukuda, Salem, and four grandchildren. Wake service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 28, at Clough-Barrick chapel, Church service Thursday, November 29, at 2 p.m. at Nichiren Buddhist church, 1127 N.
